"and its there that I would wish to be...... and the men that were boys when I was a boy, walking along with me"

With thanks to Dick Strevens who acknowledges the contribution made by Hilaire Belloc.............

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Editor's Note:  In my search for Old Boys and, in particular, David Bowen at Shene in the early 50s, I received the following effort from the wrong David Bowen of Hull who had composed this on earlier occasion.   He has obviously never been to Reunions like ours..............!

'It was a kind thought, but mistaken, to hold a Reunion at the school last week. There may be some who enjoy the concept but I am not one of them. It was a mistake to attend. Some do not fear facing the ravages of time to what were after all, mostly their school chums, but few age well, and if I may say so, fifty years was an ambitious target.

With an average age approaching seventy it requires more equanimity than most of us now posses to chat to one who was the charismatic cricket captain - now in a wheel chair; or the clever girl, confidently expected to enter university and do well in her life, now bitter about the lack of opportunities in what was in those days, still the male dominated world of work. Of the time lost trying to break through until she was forced to accept the permanent status of spinster. And what do you say when she spits out the view that work is still dominated by men, holding her cup of luke-warm tea in hands deformed by rheumatism and trembling slightly.

Then there is the minefield of polite conversation: “How has your career gone and what line were you in eventually?”….. Ah, ‘eventually’, yes nobody could figure out where one would finish up, least of all the teachers could they……. and the well meant questions; ‘...”Where did you ‘finish up’ in the end? ‘Oh, really! Was that interesting, well paid, satisfying.?”   What does one say when you don’t yet know that he is an undischarged bankrupt - or worse that it’s in no way surprising - for you remember how he used to pilfer everything from money to homework.

Knowing his past history at school you need to tread with some care. “Been in court lately?” is probably not the best opening gambit. But then again, what is?   It is all a most dreadful strain, headmaster, it really is.

But quite the worst part was our teachers. I mean where were they? Mind you I understand if you add about a quarter of a century on to our own ages it provides a bit of a clue but I confess to looking forward to pointing out to most of them that I had managed at least to avoid bankruptcy. Particularly to Mr Evans the Maths teacher, who said on my report ‘this boy is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot’.

He would never listen to my plea that Maths for me was like writing a string quartet for three players.

My own form master who summarised a whole term’s work by saying ‘his few friends would follow him anywhere, but only out of a sense of morbid curiosity’…….. and headmaster, your own predecessor but three who had the effrontery to write ‘Congratulations,  Bowen. A considerable improvement on last year!’...........'

13TH SEPTEMBER, 2002
FOXHILLS GOLF CLUB, OTTERSHAW, SURREY

Attendees (113): It is possible that this listing is marginally inaccurate. Many messages of greetings and support were received from those unable to attend. It is estimated that another forty Old Boys, previously committed elsewhere, would have attended.

Derek Arend, Ray Argent, David Ball, Barry Bannister, Harold Bartram, Leo Basten, David Battley, Michael Battley, Roy Bayliss, Brian Bessant, Graham (Ernie) Bishop, Alan Bloxham, Chris Buckerfield, Kevin Burge, David Catford, Gary Chamberlin, Victor Champion, Jeremy Chapman, Dennis Chisman, Arthur Claiden, Keith Claiden, Tony Clarke, Roger Cottee, Robert Cullen, John Ellis, Rick Emptage, Colin Endacott, Colin Enderby, Mick Facey, Gordon Fey, Martin Foran, Gerry Forse, Ken Franklin, Terry Gazzard, Dennis Geeson, Geoff Gibbins, Peter Godfrey, Douglas Godwin, David Hannell, Rob Harper, Pete Harrison, George Hartwright, Geoff Heaslewood, , Geoff Hellings, Syd Higgs, Alan Hillman, Antony Hodgson, Ian Hodgson, Leslie Hooper, Stuart Hooper, Mike Kefford, Brian Lane, Michael Larcombe, Trevor Leggett, Tony Leppard, Michael Lewis, David Lines, Don Libby, Bill Loader, Alan Marchbanks, Dudley Maynard, Peter Middleton, Tony Morris, Gordon Moxon, John Mudd, Peter O’Brien, John Olrog, Lionel Parker, Alan Pearson, Peter Penney, Ants Peters, Stanley Piper, Geoff Poat, Don Poynter, Roy Poynter, Colin Prower, Morgan Reynolds, David Richardson, Albert John Richardson, Eddie Roberts, Chris Roebuck, Alan Rogers, Denis Sealby, John Sealby, Peter Sealby, Norman Sheen, Denis Shephard, Richard Simms, John Simpson, Peter (PD) Smith, Tom Smith, John Snoxell, Brian Stamp, Edward Steers, Dick Strevens, Ron Summersby, Les Taverner, Paul Telling, Terry Thomlinson, Len Timms, John Towers, Alan Treherne, Stuart Treherne, Mike Turner, Rob Vaughan, Gerry Wall, Ken Waring, Derek Wellman, Alan Wicks, Colin Winger, Mike Wise,  Woods. Guest:Gerry Waring

John Olrog, whose wife Anita is the current Captain of the Club (and the first Lady ever to be a Captain of a mixed members club in the UK) was instrumental in providing the excellent location for such an august gathering. Foxhills is a major complex with comprehensive fitness and accommodation facilities and is set in 44 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. History buffs may be interested to know that the estate was originally developed by Charles James Fox, twice Foreign Secretary, and a man of great oratory who is credited with a major role in the liberalization of the British political system. Foxhills subsequently passed to Sir Thomas Borthwick a respected merchant. During World War 2, the estate was to become an ammunition store,a secret carefully kept away from the Germans. Those who have read the book 'War of the Worlds' by H.G.Wells, will doubtless recall that, the aliens landed in Ottershaw Surrey, arriving on the very first page.

At 7 pm a considerable onslaught of Old Boys arrived at our check-in desk to be labelled and sent forth to re-discover the past. If your name does not appear on the list of attendees, this will probably explain why.

David (Taffy) Richardson and helpers had already mounted a considerable collection of memorabilia and the invitation to bring along more was to reap a further rich harvest and there was much to stir the memory.

The evening was essentially one of beer and conversation, with piped background light music.   No food was provided.   The considerable space of a 1st Floor combined bar, dance floor and large restaurant facility was further supplemented by a verandah that overlooked the 18th Green. Alan Wicks and Rick Emptage were to take advantage of the accommodation, food and free golf, not cheap…but on an occasional basis, well worth the outlay.

Some people were to travel long distances to attend but nobody could surpass Keith Claiden who made it all the way from New Zealand…….

The evening was to close at 11 pm but, without doubt, could have gone on much longer.   Unanimous opinion was that this was an extremely enjoyable event, certainly to be repeated. A further reunion is planned for Friday 26th March, 2004 a time of the year that we hope will enable us to re-unite with those unable to be at the first gathering.

NB:   Acceptances were received from 119 Old Boys but some were prevented from attending at the last minute

Since the 2002 Reunion more Old Boys have been traced and these were much in evidence at the 2004 Reunion and David Richardson was able to tell of the success of our Website, introduced at the beginning of April, 2003, which has attracted well over 9000 hits at the time of writing.

As before Old Boys had travelled from far and wide and Dick Lee and his wife Lin, also Roy Barnes had made it all the way from the United States.   We were also able to welcome Ron Friggens an ex-Shene master whose red sweater attracted great attention.   This appears to be a talisman according to his ex-pupils although they were assured that it was not the same one........

Once again, many anecdotes were exchanged....and a lot of catching up took place in a short time.

As before, Foxhills proved an excellent venue and once again we were able to display memorabilia to stir the soul, although on this occasion Johnny Towers did not bring the bat he won in the Kew Boys Annual in about 1951.   We were privileged to see it in 2002, but in that condition it is probable it would not have survived another trip from Devon ......!!!!!!!!

Background music was provided and limited 'nibbles' were available.   Photographs of the event can be seen in the Photo Gallery

24 Old Boys visited the School prior to the Reunion, as in previous years and were well looked after by Laurie Kennison.

David Richardson welcomed the assembly to the eighth Shene Old Boys Reunion since 2002 and extended a special welcome to the guests.   To those who were at the School in the morning, he hoped that they enjoyed their trip down Memory Lane and had now dried away the tears.

David thanked Dennis O’Shea and Dipak Sharma and their teams who looked after us well and gave a special mention to his co-host...his son Grant who had taken a day away from his duties with the British Army.

David offered a few facts regarding the day:

645 invitations were sent out by land/air or e-mail

175 responses were received and those unable to attend conveyed their very best wishes for a good day.

One could only conjecture why 470 people didn’t feel the need to respond.   Interestingly, those abroad largely did.

Whichever way one looked at it, our turnout was still impressive and some had travelled considerable distances.   It was good to see them and David thanked them for their effort.

David advised the assembly of those who had passed on since our last Reunion.

Ruth Roebuck was in attendance and David hoped that she was not distressed by the mentioning of Chris.

David had been asked by Radio London to talk about Shene school in a series called ‘My School’.   The interviewer who was all of 38 years of age had little idea of what had gone before and it was David's job to inform him and his listeners.

The recording was played while the assembly took lunch.

Booked in but unable to attend: (6) David Ball, Trevor Leggett, Eddie Roberts, John Webster, Mike Wise, Colin Winger

David Richardson welcomed the assembled Shene Old Boys and their guests.   This was our 9thReunion since 2002 and just possibly our last.   Unfortunately time is catching up with us. He hoped that those  who had toured the school enjoyed their trip down Memory Lane.   In David's case he could still recall the sound of Brigden’s plimsoll……………….

Congratulations went to Trevor Griffiths. It was his birthday and David reflected on his possible age and considered that if he was anything like the rest of the assembly he was no youngster.    Hel also mentioned Alan Bloxham who celebrated on the 23rd and also included anyone who had had a birthday in the last 12 months to ensure that nobody felt left out of the celebrations.   Trevor Day had already raised the occasion by leading 'Happy Birthday'.

David's co-host again was his son Grant Richardson who had taken another day off from his duties with the British Army.  He had also helped David last year.   David thanked  Grant and  Dennis O’Shea and his team for looking after us so well.

The buffet lunch was excellent and a considerable amount of photos and memorabilia was on display and provided much discussion

David reminded Old Boys that they can stay informed via our Website www.sheneob.co.uk.................     The address was suitably inscribed  on his sweater.   The more astute would have noticed the date discrepancy which he explained by saying that every eighteen months when the Reunion comes round he orders the updated version.   He now had about eight of them and his chums are getting heartily sick of seeing them and they are under no illusions as to his connection to Shene Old Boys……………

He hoped that all present would enjoy a very pleasant interlude recalling the days that made us what we are today…………………………
