30/4/08 QBE closing in on rival insurer
|
|
THE Australian sharemarket closed marginally higher yesterday as investors kept to the sidelines after recent gains and waited for a stronger lead from United States markets.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index closed 4.2 points higher at 5606.9, while the broader All Ordinaries added 2.3 points to 5672.6.
But one clear sign was provided by QBE's stalking of the rival insurer Insurance Australia Group, whose share price slipped below the value of the takeover offer for the first time.
Market sentiment has been eroding the premium built into IAG's price since QBE's terms were revealed two weeks ago, but that disappeared yesterday when the owner of the NRMA insurance brand closed at $4.21, down 8c on the day, valuing the cash and share offer for IAG at $4.22.
The market was responding to IAG's latest piece of bad news on Monday when it disclosed yet another earnings downgrade

28/4/08 Wet Weather Warning - RAA
|
|
Heavy rainfall across Adelaide’s metropolitan area has seen dozens of motorists left stranded on the roadside during the weekend and this morning.
RAA spokesman, Adam Thomson said Adelaide’s winter weather conditions had put many cars to the test, with flat batteries and other electrical problems the leading cause of most breakdowns over the last four days.
“The majority of our calls over the long weekend and into today have been for dead batteries and ignition problems – often as a result of moisture getting into the electrical system,” Mr Thomson said.
“And a broken down car could have been timed any worse for a number of families – who were then faced with delays in getting children back to school this morning,” he said.
“The number of breakdowns has seen significant demand placed on RAA’s roadside assistance, and at present stranded motorists can expect to wait nearly two hours until an RAA patrol arrives – so we ask for patience as we work to clear the large backlog of calls for help.”

|
Australia's world-recognised roadside patrol services have demonstrated their skills at the first Australian Road Patrol Skills Showcase, conducted in Canberra by the Australian Automobile Association on April 9 and 10.

The roadside patrol officers compared their skills in a range of roadside situations including flat tyres, unlocking vehicles (with and without technology), battery condition and diagnosis and repairing engine faults.
