About Giclee Printing
The term Giclee comes from the French verb gicler - to squirt. Giclee means simply a squirt of liquid. Modern giclee images (prints) are produced by high resolution digital scanning of the original artwork using state of the art technology. They are then printed with high quality Archival inks onto various surfaces (known as substrates) such as Fine Art watercolour paper, canvas or photo based paper. Because of the sophistication of the inks used, giclee printing gives far better colour accuracy than other more widely known printing processes such as off-set lithography. The state of the art 8-12 colour printers used for these prints are capable of reproducing the finest detail and, particularly with paintings, the exact body and texture of the original. The image is retained by the professional printer on a digitally archived file which will not deteriorate in the way that negatives and film do. Additional giclee prints can be produced very easily and at minimal cost. These are usually confined to a Limited Edition - such as is found in etching and lithography. Giclee is definitely not a mass production printing process. With a limited edition, always the case with this series, each print is signed by the artist, titled and given a limited edition number with the total number in the edition indicated (usually 30 with us) in manuscript form.
