About UsAt El Rancho Wakan we are dedicated to preserving and promoting the Spanish Barb Horse. Our fascination began 12 years ago upon reading some old magazine articles about a historic horse in need of dedicated breeders to help restore the breeds numbers. From then on we knew that this was the breed for us. The description of the horses comformation and abilities along with its history in the United States was too exciting and we were hooked. Our first horse was a gift. Pepita Del Sol, our beautiful Medicine Hat mare was given to us and we saw this as good omen. To be given a Sacred horse by people we hadn't even met! We also purchased La Reina, our Dun mare at the same time. Both have proven themselves to be excellent brood mares. Because of our special beginning we felt compelled to try and get the finest breeding stock we could. Campo's Muchacho, our main stud, is a Scarface grandson and has always sired outstanding foals. We are continuing to try and improve our stock and last year added 2 horses just caught in the wild to use in our breeding program.
We believe in using gentle horse training techniques and in trying to promote the Old California style horsemanship.
>The name 'El Rancho Wakan' combines the Spanish culture and the Native America culture. Rancho, means Ranch in Spanish and the word Wakan (pronounced) WAH-Kahn is the Sioux word for God or something we can't totally understand or something Sacred or a Mystery. It truly is a Mystery how we ended up with this ranch and our herd.
