KEY TO QUESTION COLORS:
LIGHT BLUE = Possible
GREEN = Hard
YELLOW = Ridiculously difficult
RED = Impossible. Nobody would know this.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Many of us know only one city in each of the world's countries, namely the capital (and sometimes not even that! See Tough World Capitals)
But how many of us know any of the other major cities in each country?
As you take the quiz, keep in mind that metropolitan areas are preferred, and are used wherever possible.
If you guess a city that is on the list, but you guess it in the wrong order, give yourself half the indicated points for that city.
Examples:
You guess that Chicago (a 1 point city) is the 2nd largest city in the United States, when it is really the 3rd largest. Give yourself 1/2 point.
You guess that Ouahigouya (a 1000 point city) is the 4th largest city in Burkina Faso when it really the fifth largest. Give yourself 500 points.
(Of course, if you guess the same city again later, in its correct place, you can only take the points for when it was right. In other words, you can only score once for each city you guess.)
If you guess the former name of a city, give yourself 1 point instead of the indicated value (1/2 point if you guessed it out of order).

My score, right after creating and testing the web page, so I was pretty familiar with it, was 209. I'll take the test again in a few months and let you know how I do.
It will be seen right away that many countries are not represented at all. That is because I thought they were just too difficult. (If anyone thinks I made the quiz too easy, just let me know!)
In other situations, for some countries which contain huge urban sprawls, such as Japan and Germany, different authorities split up the megalpolises in different ways, combining different sets of cities together, which makes comparison meaningless.
Population statistics and figures are controversial and very difficult to pin down, particularly for metropolitan areas. The two sites I found most useful in preparing this quiz are World Urbanization Prospects: The 2005 Revision Population Database which is based completely on mathematical models, some of which aren't very up-to-date, and The Major Cities and Agglomerations of the World which is largely based on census data, but contains data entry errors.
