People Against Methane P.A.M.

THE DANGERS OF STORING L.N.G. (Liquid Natural Gas)

The proposed terminal will store over 100,000 tons of L.N.G in two huge tanks yet to be built. Both tanks will be over 130 feet high, take 3-1/2 years to finish construction resulting in 24 hours continuous noise. The proposed storage facility will store one fifth of the natural gas for the whole of England. This will pose a risk to Canvey and to areas well beyond.

If there was a major spillage, because of the very low temperature (minus 270 degrees F) it would mean that the liquid gas would freeze everything in its path. It would then boil off, evaporate and expand some 620 times, from a liquid state to a gaseous state, forming an unconfined vapour cloud. This cloud would carry on expanding until it is at the right mixture of Methane and air, making it possible to be ignited from the slightest spark, resulting in an unconfined vapour cloud explosion. This would cause an uncontrollable fire, for possibly up to a 40 mile radius of Canvey Island according to wind direction and ignition source.

The Health and Safety Executive will confirm there is no known way to control an L.N.G. spill, the vapour cloud ensuing from that spill or the vapour cloud explosion - the fire ensuing from this scenario. Therefore it would be a case of search and rescue afterwards, not evacuation. For more information on the dangers of LNG please look at http://timrileylaw.com/LNG.htm
