We are now official, the Australian Army Apprentices Association Inc. This was largely the result of work by Gib Owen.
However, there is still quite a way to go before we can call for membership, with a number of immediate procedural motions to be discussed and carried by the interim Committee, particularly membership issues and procedures, fees, mail address, bank account, committee responsibilities, membership communication, web site, welfare support, first Special General Meeting, Dedication of the Memorial Plaque at the AWM, etc.
One thing I left out of my last Update was the Objectives of the Association. These are:
1. To enable constant communication between members to promote the interest of members through the Association.
2. To promote the welfare of members and spouses.
3. To promote the maintenance of the Marine Gates, Mace Oval and the Parade Ground.
4. To create a record of the members’ history, and that of the School.
5. Support of any related museum and relics.
6. To promote the concept of Army Apprenticeships.
7. To recognise the contribution of members to Australia and the Army.
Our web site is now almost there, thanks to Glenn Jones. He is now waiting on me to provide further information for the site, but some of these changes hinge on the first committee meeting.
Last week I attended the dedication of a memorial plaque at the AWM to 32 Small Ship Sqn that had been organised by their Association, of which I am a member. This and the dinner that evening were very well organised and I now have a better idea of what we can do. We are fortunate in have a serving general (Lt Gen Ken Gillespie AO DSM CSM) and the Assistant Manager Events and Ceremonies at the AWM (Craig Johnson) as Apprentices and who will hopefully be in a position to assist in the organisation and conduct of the dedication.
I note that about 600 Navy apprentices are celebrating 50 years since the opening of the Navy Apprentices School and will be in Canberra for ANZAC Day. I hope to be able to meet with them.
It has been brought to my notice that a new Anglican Grammar School is to be built at Balcombe, on land that is believed to include Mace, the Gates and the Parade Ground. I have been in contact with the developers to express our interest in the site and requesting further information. It is opportune that this has happened just as the AAAA has been formed as we are able to represent our views far more strongly. I will keep all advised of developments.
It is with sadness that I report that Geoff Beggs, 20th intake electrician, passed away last Wednesday after an 18 month battle with cancer. I am sure that condolences from us all go out to his family and mates.
I hope you all have a great ANZAC Day and renew old acquaintances. If you don’t march then consider doing so, otherwise this great tradition will fade away or be swamped by groups who do not truly represent the ANZAC forces and our traditions.
Finally, if you know of anyone who is not on my email list and wishes to be, please have them send a note to me at Frank.Poole@bigpond.com
