REUNION UPDATE 10/1/2007

Ladies & Gentlemen

Not far off now, so here is a bit of an update.

Most people seem to be staying at the Stump, so it is proposed that for the BBQ on Friday Night we will have a bus pick people up there at appoximately 1745h or 5.45 pm which ever you understand these days. On Friday night you will also be handed an Itinerary for whats going to happen on the Saturday at this stage we are not planning any activities for Sunday as most of you have travelled and will need to get home.
The bus will start picking peole up around 1830h for the Saturday night Dinner.

One of the thing that we are trying to organise for about 1300h on Saturday is a tour through the wings, just like a stroll down memory lane.

I have attached a spread sheet for everyone to look at to see who is coming, if you think anyone esle is interested there is still time you just need to let us know.

The dress for Friday night is neat casual. ie shorts, shirt and sandals as a guide.

The dres for Saturday night will be slightly more formal. ie neat pants, a button up shirt and shoes as an example. For  the ladies that are attending it will be casual evening wear.

If anyone has any quiries don't hesitate to contact myself or nicko.

Regards

 AUSTRALIAN ARMY APPRENTICES ASSOCIATION INC

NEWS UPDATE 19 APRIL 2006-04-19

We are now official, the Australian Army Apprentices Association Inc.  This was largely the result of work by Gib Owen.

However, there is still quite a way to go before we can call for membership, with a number of immediate procedural motions to be discussed and carried by the interim Committee, particularly membership issues and procedures, fees, mail address, bank account, committee responsibilities, membership communication, web site, welfare support, first Special General Meeting, Dedication of the Memorial Plaque at the AWM,  etc.

One thing I left out of my last Update was the Objectives of the Association.  These are:

 1.                  To enable constant communication between members to promote the interest of members through the Association.

 2.                  To promote the welfare of members and spouses.

 3.                  To promote the maintenance of the Marine Gates, Mace Oval and the Parade Ground.

 4.                  To create a record of the members’ history, and that of the School.

 5.                  Support of any related museum and relics.

 6.                  To promote the concept of Army Apprenticeships.

 7.                  To recognise the contribution of members to Australia and the Army.

Our web site is now almost there, thanks to Glenn Jones.  He is now waiting on me to provide further information for the site, but some of these changes hinge on the first committee meeting.

Last week I attended the dedication of a memorial plaque at the AWM to 32 Small Ship Sqn that had been organised by their Association, of which I am a member.  This and the dinner that evening were very well organised and I now have a better idea of what we can do.  We are fortunate in have a serving general (Lt Gen Ken Gillespie AO DSM CSM) and the Assistant Manager Events and Ceremonies at the AWM (Craig Johnson) as Apprentices and who will hopefully be in a position to assist in the organisation and conduct of the dedication.

I note that about 600 Navy apprentices are celebrating 50 years since the opening of the Navy Apprentices School and will be in Canberra for ANZAC Day.  I hope to be able to meet with them.

It has been brought to my notice that a new Anglican Grammar School is to be built at Balcombe, on land that is believed to include Mace, the Gates and the Parade Ground.  I have been in contact with the developers to express our interest in the site and requesting further information.  It is opportune that this has happened just as the AAAA has been formed as we are able to represent our views far more strongly.  I will keep all advised of developments.

It is with sadness that I report that Geoff Beggs, 20th intake electrician, passed away last Wednesday after an 18 month battle with cancer.  I am sure that condolences from us all go out to his family and mates.

I hope you all have a great ANZAC Day and renew old acquaintances.  If you don’t march then consider doing so, otherwise this great tradition will fade away or be swamped by groups who do not truly represent the ANZAC forces and our traditions.

Finally, if you know of anyone who is not on my email list and wishes to be, please have them send a note to me at Frank.Poole@bigpond.com

Australian Defence Medal Media Release

Australia will recognise the service of more than one million current and former Defence Force personnel with the Australian Defence Medal (ADM), Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence Bruce Billson, announced today.

"Her Majesty the Queen has approved the official regulations and design for the award that aims to recognise current and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) Regular and Reserve personnel, and volunteer and National Servicemen, who have served since the end of World War II," Mr Billson said.

"The Australian Government is committed to recognising the outstanding contribution to our proud military history made by Australian men and women in uniform.

"After extensive consultation with veterans’ organisations and the wider community, the government has decided to broaden the eligibility criteria to include former ADF members who completed their initial enlistment period, or four years service, whichever is the lesser," Mr Billson said.

"The criteria also recognises National Servicemen and those who could not serve the four-year qualifying period because of the ADF’s workplace and enlistment policies of the time.

"The expanded criteria also includes those who die in service or are medically discharged due to permanent injury and unable to reach four years or complete their initial period of enlistment," Mr Billson said.

"Although creating any new medal is an extensive process which includes consultation, design and testing, Royal approval and manufacturing, the medal is an important tribute to those who have given so much for our country.

"Presentation ceremonies by senior military officers and Federal parliamentarians are expected to commence in mid-2006 as the medals become available. I encourage all those eligible to submit applications and supporting evidence as soon as possible to receive the recognition they deserve," Mr Billson said.

For further information, a special application form for the ADM is available from the Defence website at www.defence.gov.au/dpe/dpe_site/honours_awards/ and from RSLs and other ex-service organisations or by calling 1800 111 321.
