The Hayhursts Clitheronian Road Rally runs on Saturday night, starting from Blackburn Services on the M65.

If you haven't volunteered to marshal, there's still time - contact Chief Marshal Derek Lewin on 07977 212468. Goodie bag and free breakfast for all marshals.

Four CDMC crews are on the entry list.

Chris Day is making a return to road rallying in his Mini Cooper S. He is seeded at car 10 with the world busiest navigator in the left hand seat - TBA!

At 12 are Simon Boardman and Ian Rayner. Simon must be expecting smooth roads as he is using his Mitsubishi Mirage rather than the Proton. Not that you would notice as they're based on the same car!

Dominic McTear has Irvine Holtom navigating for him in a Pug 309 at car 20.

Dion Wild is out on his first road rally at car 24. He's running in the semi-expert class as he's taking Bury's Matt Field as navigator!

Good luck to everyone involved.

1st August 2011

At the weekend, Alistair Fisher and Daniel Barritt's excellent run on the Rally Finland round of the WRC Academy came to an end on stage seven - they held a 28sec lead after stage six. To quote - "they were winning ever stage then binned it" - although their retirement is listed as "mechanical"!

Jim  Clark BRC Challange rally.
Richard Archer/Terry Martin took an astonishing victory on the Jim Clark Challenge Rally after overcoming a 40 second deficit in the final two stages. The rally finale showed just how competitive and coveted the BRC Challenge title has become.

But it was championship newcomer Jack Rowe setting the early pace on the opening Duns spectator stage on Friday night.
The Doncaster youngster, who had never driven a closed road event before, showed his quick learning abilities as he led the field through the Mantis Instant Shine sponsored town centre test.
The eight and a half mile Bothwell stage provided the competitors with the second challenge of the evening. And with rain clouds gathering and light fading, tyre choice and concentration were going to be at the forefront of drivers minds.
Former BRC Challenge stalwart Richard Sykes put his Citroën C2R2 Max into the lead of the rally going into the night’s final stage. Hot on his heels was tarmac specialist Richard Archer in his ex-Kris Meeke Vauxhall Corsa, just 1.1 adrift.
Alex Parpottas was an impressive third on Bothwell in his Fiesta ST ahead of Rowe, Matt Edwards and Phil Scholes.
The last stage of the night was the infamous thirteen mile Abbey St Bathans and it was Welshman Edwards who was quickest ahead of Rowe, Sykes and Moore. Once again the top runners and riders covered by less than ten seconds.
Going into the overnight halt at the Kelso Racecourse, it was Richard Sykes who managed to keep ahead of the pack, holding a 4.1 second advantage over his young rival Rowe. Round one winner Edwards lay third, seemingly putting his championship back on track, after retiring from the Pirelli event last month. The Cumbrian event’s winner Moore lay fifth just 22 seconds behind the leader and 6.1 behind fourth placed man Archer, who claimed to have the biggest moment of his life in Abbey, blaming the rear tyres for going off.

While Richard Archer was struggling to gain his rhythm on SS7, dropping 22 seconds to Rowe, after spinning twice on the damp tarmac, local driver Garry Pearson took advantage of his local knowledge in his Super 1000 Nissan Micra to post fourth quickest time over the four mile stage, sadly a feat he was unable to muster again throughout the day.
Perhaps the biggest news coming from the stage was the retirement of early championship leader Matt Edwards who crashed his MG ZR. Although he managed to get the car going with the help of some spectators, it came to a halt shortly after.
Stage eight offered up the same result as stage seven with Rowe quickest ahead of Sykes, making it look like a two horse race for the victory. But with tarmac ace Archer bedding in a new co-driver in the shape of Terry Martin, the pace would not abandon him for too much longer.
Championship contenders Simon Moore and Emma Morrison struggled to match the outright pace of the sealed surface specialists, but showed maturity in being the best of the rest. And by keeping a close watch over the leaders, any mistake made would be pounced upon by the Renault Clio pair.
Next up for the Dulux Trade British Rally Championship’s support series came the 12.45 mile Ayton stage north east of Duns. Archer/Martin (S1600 Corsa Kit car) was quickest ahead of Moore, even though they were baulked, after catching a car on their second loop, and Sykes, who posted identical times, just 5.9 seconds behind.
With Rowe a further 23 seconds back, the door was now ajar if not fully open for Archer. With the gap to the leader now 40 seconds it looked impossible for Archer to strike from this far back with only two stages to go.
The penultimate Eccles stage was the longest of the rally at 13.70 miles and would prove to be a turning point not only in the rally but perhaps the championship.
Simon Moore and Emma Morrison were the first to feel the pressure when they suffered a front right puncture, dropping them a minute in the stage. It still left them fourth overall, but left them no chance of capitalising upon any misfortune suffered by the leading pack.
Scholes and Damien Smith sandwiched Jack Rowe in third and fifth respectively, finally putting some quality times in after a difficult rally for the Fiesta SportChallenge pair.
Once again Archer/Martin put the bit between their teeth and attacked the stage with the skill and ferocity that delights watching spectators, as they clawed 16 seconds back on rally leader Sykes.
The Midlander still had 15 seconds over Rowe and nearly 25 on Archer heading into the final 11 miler at Swinton. Sykes had not only been quick all event but consistent with it too, it was going to take something extraordinary to take it from his grasp.
The final stage of the Jim Clark Challenge Rally will live long in the memory for those lucky enough to be roadside during the dogfight that ensued.
The drama started when  co-driver Janice Moore miss-called a note,  while flat in fifth, and over shoot a junction, losing ten seconds.
Archer/Martin were in hot pursuit and caught Sykes at the Swinton crossroads which became the catalyst of a no quarter asked, no quarter given, touring car style battle on the Scottish Borders roads, thrilling the spectators.
Archer managed to get past Sykes and pulled out an advantage that would secure him his third successive win on the Borders stages. “It’s the most memorable win I’ve ever had” said Archer who added “I’ve won from the front before but never from so far back”. Their next event together will be the Ulster rally in August.

25th April

BLACKBURN'S Terry Martin had to put in a class-winning performance to uphold local honours after no fewer than four East Lancashire crews failed to finish Sunday’s Legend Fires SMC Stages.Martin, who was co-driving Simon Chapman in a Vauxhall Corsa S1600, not only finished first in Class B but ended the day as top two-wheel-drive car after finishing sixth overall.A last-stage puncture robbed the Clitheroe and District Motor Club pairing of a top five finish, which they missed out on only by virtue of the ‘fastest first’ tie-break rule. They finished on identical times with the Ford Escort Cosworth of Keith and Jackie Richardson but the Cumbrian couple claimed fifth place having been quickest on stage one.The first of the East Lancashire crews to be forced into retirement were Chris and Heidi Woodcock when a stub axle broke on their Proton Satria on the opening stage.Next to go out were Nigel Worswick and Clive Molyneux when their Ford Escort Mk2 developed engine problems – and they were soon to be followed by the Peugeot 206 of Ross Miller and Paul Blanchard. In a bid to keep them in the rally their service crew had undertaken a temporary manifold repair but unfortunately it failed and a small engine fire developed which damaged the wiring loom.Accrington teenager Hazel Johnson was contesting only her second rally in a Nissan Micra with the more experienced Steven Butler in the co-driver’s seat. They were lying fourth in the hotly contested Class A when driveshaft failure forced their retirement.

20th February

David Wallbank and Terry Martin finish (yes I said FINISH) the Riponian Stages 21st overall and 13th in class.

David Sunderland and John Marsh finish 43rd and 12th in class.

18th February

Clitheroe and District Motor Club members David Wallbank and Terry Martin, have put in a late entry for this weekend’s Riponian Stages.

Wallbank is hoping the fuel problems that sidelined his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo5 on the recent Legend Fires North West Stages are a thing of the past.

Fellow Clitheroe members David Sunderland and John Marsh are also contesting the rally in a Ford Escort Mk1.

Strictly Ice Driving!

There was no shortage of snow in Lincolnshire for last weekend’s Hall Trophy Stages Rally an event organised and run by members of Clitheroe & District Motor Club. The scene at the Blyton venue on Saturday morning was reminiscent of a Christmas card so it was no surprise that the start was delayed in order that the roads could be swept clear of the white stuff.

Simon Singleton and Alex Taylor were quickest from the off and the Subaru Impreza pairing would stay at the head of the standings for the duration of the rally. Trevor Smith and Ian Wozencroft finished second in a Ford Escort Mk2 with another Impreza, in the hands of Robbie Pearson and Michael Wastling finishing third.

Clitheroe bragging rights went to Chris Woodcock and Terry Martin, who having set a brace of top three stage times, eventually brought their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo5.9 home fifth whilst taking the Class 5 award for good measure. The snowy conditions hadn’t been forecast and found Woodcock wanting for the right tyres as he said “We only had intermediates whereas the cars in front had gravel tyres.”

Ross Miller and Brian Otridge were also in the prizes collecting the award for finishing second in Class 3 in their Peugeot 206. After finishing 12th overall Miller said “It’s the first time I’ve competed on snow and ice and the car was all over the place until I’d worked out the braking points. Then in the afternoon as it got colder and darker they all changed but it was a good challenge.”

It wasn’t such a good day though for Dave Calvert and John Marsh who, having survived more spins than Torvill and Dean, eventually retired their Ford Escort Mk2 with engine problems.

An Oily Ending to Barritt’s Challenge.

By Phil James

(Reproduced by kind permission of the Lancashire Telegraph)

Whilst Sebastian Loeb capped off his seventh world championship winning season by taking a third consecutive victory on Wales Rally GB things didn’t go so well for Barrowford’s Daniel Barritt. Barritt’s season of highs and lows took another dip as a loss of gearbox oil put paid to his and driver Toshi Arai’s hopes of finishing the season with a flourish.

They made a steady start with their Subaru Impreza completing Thursday’s Cardiff Bay Spectator Special Stage in 27th place overall, fifth in the Production World Rally Championship category. Sadly it all began to go wrong midway through the following mornings opening Hafren test and by the end of the following Sweet Lamb stage their rally was effectively over.

Barritt explained “By the stage finish we’d lost all the gearbox oil so a new box had to be fitted in order that we could restart the rally the following day. On Saturday we had more handling problems and had no confidence in the car. This meant more work for the mechanics and after exceeding our permitted 15 minute service time allowance at Builth Wells we collected more time penalties.

They went on to complete the rest of Saturday’s and Sunday’s scheduled stages finishing the rally 30th overall and 9th in the PWRC class. Barritt continued “I look forward to my home rally, it has some of the best stages in the world, but this year it didn’t go to plan. When you’re effectively forced out so early your motivation goes and you lose that extra 10% that’s so important to getting a good result.”

Portugese pairing Armindo Araújo and Miguel Ramalho became the first crew in over a decade to secure two PWRC titles in a row. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X crew finished ahead of the Impreza of their closest championship rivals Swedens Patrik Flodin and Goran Bergsten to retain their crowns.

Loeb rated his win as his hardest of the year saying "It was a difficult battle but I took a lot of pleasure from the stages and really enjoyed this rally, which was definitely the longest battle I've had this season." Runners-up Petter Solberg and Chris Patterson finished 19.1 seconds behind in another Citroen C4 WRC.

Matthew Wilson and Scott Martin were the top British crew finishing seventh in their Stobart M-Sport backed Ford Focus WRC.

Pokerstars Asphalt Stages Rally 12th / 13th November

CDMC crews D Harper/P Swinscoe & C Woodcock/T Martin were in action this weekend in the IOM. With some tricky & varying weather conditions both crews were lucky to finish. Harper / Swinscoe finishing 4th and Woodcock / Martin 18th.

Clitheroe Crews Sweep up Road Awards!

By Phil James

(Reproduced by kind permission of the Lancashire Telegraph)

Clitheroe & District Motor Club crews have swept up all the major prizes in the Gazzard Accounts SD34 MSG Road Rally Championships with no fewer than eight members picking up silverware.

Terry Martin retained the Drivers title he’s now won for the past five years, having headed the championship standings from the outset. A maximum points score on the season’s opening round, the Louth based Bruce Robinson Rally was followed by more top scores on the Ryemoor Trophy Rally in Yorkshire and the VK Derbyshire Rally. When the series moved closer to home for Garstang & Preston District Motor Club’s Memorial Rally, Martin, from Blackburn, had to play second best to Accrington’s Simon Boardman. Not that it mattered as he still out-scored his main rival, fellow Clitheroe member Paul Buckel and the title was almost his.

The cancellation of this month’s Westmorland Rally means he can’t be caught leaving the championship standings as they finished in 2009 with Buckel finishing runner-up and Boardman taking the final podium place, another Clitheroe 1-2-3!

The Navigators award goes to Accrington’s Steve Butler, the first time he has ever won the prestigious title whilst Alan Douglas was another first time winner collecting the Novice Driver award. A trio of Clitheroe members all collected Navigator Awards with Paul Taylor taking the Experts prize, Ian Rayner the Semi-Expert and the Novice award going to Dave Barritt.

There won’t however be a sixth successive title for Martin in 2011 as his rallying plans are going in a different direction as he explained “I need a change as I think I’ve achieved as much as I can in road rallying after winning championships. Moorspeed of Padiham are building me a 1400cc Vauxhall Corsa stage rally car and I’m going to contest the National Tarmac Championship in it.”

9th September 2010

Report from Paula Swinscoe

Feb 5th and 6th 2010. Legend Fires North West Stages.  John and Paula Swinscoe took their Evo 9 to 14th overall on a very tough 28 stage rally with extremely unpredictable weather and surface conditions.

April 25th 2010 Lee Holland Memorial Stages Paula sat in with junior driver Ryan Jenkinson in his first ever stage rally in his Nissan Micra.  WIth 19 entries from the junior their first stage time was 12th quickest but by the end of the rally they were setting 6th quickest times, securing 9th place overall in the junior rally.

May 8th and 9th 2010 Manx Telecom Rally.  John Coupe/Rob Fagg - 12th overall, 3rd in class John Swinscoe/Paula Swinscoe - 23rd overall 2nd in class.

May 28th and 29th 2010 - Jim Clark International.  Paula answered a last minute plea for a co-driver from driver Gordon "Gogsie" Nichol in his Suzuki Swift.  The paring was competitive in the stages but were forced to stop on stage and change an unfortunate puncture half way through the second fifteen mile Abbey St Bathans stage on Friday night dropping them a long way down the leader board.  On Saturday they were again setting good times when a misjudged cut coming in to a chicane threw them side ways in to the bales and lodged the car across a ditch.  After 20mins of pushing and pulling from an army of spectators they eventually got it free and were able to continue.  They eventually finished 22nd overall and 3rd in class R1.

June 20th 2010 - Enville Stages.  Paula was back in the jujior rally where she partnered 15 year old Dale Davies in his wholly self built and funded Micra on only his 2nd ever stage rally.  For the first time the juniors ran exactly the same stages as the seniors and were classified within the same results.  With John Swinscoe helping on spanners they finished 35th overall and 12th in the junior class.

July9th and 10th 2010 - Isle of Man International - Paula teamed up with Mark Gamble in his Citroen C2R2 Max.  Having set 4th (in class) quickest time on the 1st stage the 2nd stage was stopped.  They were 3rd quickest on stage 3 but picked up a puncture on stage 4.  Then a misfire on stage 5, car refusing to start at the In Control of stage 6.  Fortunately the start was delayed which allowed them to change the throttle body and get back to service.  All seemed fine for stage 7 but a heavy landing on stage 8 resulted in a broken gear box mount.  They managed to strap the gear box in place and limp through stage 9 back to service where the service crew managed to change the gear box in 31 mins.  A further misfire at the start of stage 12 put them OTL.

Thanks to Paula Swinscoe for reports.

20th June 2010

Ross Miller has taken up the eco challenge this weekend on the Enville Stages. He decided ?? to keep his carbon footprint down by only doing one loop of each stage. He may have taken stage maximums but well done on saving the planet !!. Despite this the eco warrior has still maintained his lead in the SD34 Championship

13th June 2010

There was success for many of the East Lancashire competitors who were out on the rally.Accrington’s Simon Boardman, in a Proton Gti, finished an excellent ninth overall with Ex .CofC Steve Coombes on the maps.Accrington’s Simon Boardman, in a Proton Gti, finished an excellent ninth overall with Ex .CofC Steve Coombes on the maps.
Fellow Proton pilot Terry Martin, current leader of the SD34 Championship, overcame a sticking caliper to claim 11th overall.
Martin, from Blackburn, and navigator Paul Taylor would have finished seventh if they had queried the two minutes of road penalties handed to them in error by the organisers.
But the pair left before the results were published and were unable to get the time loss scrubbed.
In the semi-experts class Paul Buckel and Steve Butler, from Accrington, finished fifth in class and 19th overall. Their run was dogged by clutch problems, caused by a leaking crankshaft oil seal on their Proton.
Chorley’s Paul Gray and Marcus Pomfret brought their Mini 1293 home in 29th place – enough to take the historic class win.
Two places behind them were Clitheroe DMC veterans Alan Douglas and Dave Barritt, with only 115 years of experiance between them,  boiled the brakes on their Vauxhall Corsa Gsi on the first 30-mile section.
That left them with very little brakes at all for the second section, which made their win in the novice class all the more remarkable!
Fellow novices Paul Flynn and Andy Froude had more reason to celebrate than most at the finish, after collecting third place in the novice class on their first ever road rally.
“Thanks to everyone who entered and to all our volunteers, the equipment set-up crew, the small band of marshals who made sure we had a rally and finally the rest of organising team, especially those who stepped in at the last minute to help with results,” said clerk of the course Steve Kenyon.

The SD34 MSG/ANCC/EMAMC/ANEMMC championships got underway this weekend, with three East Lancashire crews in action on the lanes of Lincolnshire.

The Bruce Robinson Rally is the first of 10 rounds, and organisers Lincoln Motor Cycle and Car Club Ltd laid out a 155-mile route including 26 miles of whites, which varried from farm tracks to airfield stages, with a forty five car entry, and most of the top crews from the midlands and south of England out on this classic rally. Reigning champion Terry Martin, from Blackburn, and navigator Jerry Hettrick from Carlisle, are one of the favourites for victory in their Proton Satria.

Accrington’s Paul Buckel, winner of the semi-experts class last year, has a new car for 2010, swapping his Vauxhall Nova for a Proton Compact 1.5.

A partnership that started 30 years ago was reunited on Saturday night, when Alan Douglas teamed up with Clitheroe and district Motor Club president Dave Barritt. The pair are planning on contesting the full SD34 Championship in Alan's GpA Vauxhall Corsa.
