Into The Night by Raymond Smith
(The following facts have been related to us by an ex police officer who worked with the Vancouver City Police, and is based on the current investigation into the disappearance of over 75 ‘prostitutes’ as reported by the local media. Certain names have been excluded due to legal requirements surrounding the forthcoming trial)
The story of Vancouvers missing women has appeared twice on ‘Americas Most Wanted’ and was reported in several American newspapers as being ‘one of the most notorious cases of serial killing ever recorded.’ In spite of all this we still know very little about the goings-on at a pig farm in the small town of Port Coquitlam just a twenty minute drive from Vancouvers notorious red light district. It all began several years ago, and it will be several years from now before the accused owner of the pig farm goes to trial. So far it has cost the British Columbia government nearly $15 million in police costs, lawyers fees, and court costs, and may finally reach double that figure. The end product is a likely conviction of one man who will spend the rest of his life behind bars. And he’s already over 40 years old.
How did such an horrendous tale of evil ever get started. I’ll tell you what I know about the business of prostitution, and why the police do not go charging off into the night looking for missing street workers. Hookers, as they’re called, will climb into a strangers car, in the sleeziest part of town, in the wee small hours, after agreeing a price for some sort of ‘service,’ and allow themselves to be driven to any dark alley or secluded spot to perform their function. After that they most often get driven back to their ‘patch’ and left to wander the streets for another ‘trick.’ But over the last 10 to 12 years over 75 of these street women have disappeared from the streets of Vancouver. Some were never reported by their families as missing for years. Others have disappeared without anyone ever caring. Until a few years ago, (actual details of the investigation into this crime is still under wraps by the courts) nothing was known about a possible link to a pig farm in Port Coquitlam. Then an odd occurence happened that centred on the pig farm. One thing led to another and the police began their investigation. Bones, and rotting body parts were found buried all over the farm, and to date a great number (figures withheld) have been identified. They were all prostitutes.
Cries of ‘why haven’t the police done more for prostitutes in the past’ revealed the obvious answers. That being that if a woman will climb into a car with any Tom, Dick, or Harry who offers them $25 for a service, then they can’t be crying out for protection. Go in harms way and harm will come your way. No hooker ever wants to see attentative police watching their every move! So how would police stop these prostitutes from being driven off into the night?
The pig farm is still being excavated and weekly they’re finding more bones, some they just cannot identify even by the latest DNA forensic means. The ‘gathering’ of information goes on for the host of government appointed defence lawyers, and of course the accused awaits his day in court. Hard to believe just one man was behind all this. But harder still is the fact this pig farmer bought and slaughtered 150 pigs a month, selling the meat to local stores and restaurants. Sweet & sour pork and barbecued ribs take on a whole new meaning! I’ll settle for fish & chips!
